Why Scribbles
Why ScribblesOver the years, I’ve tested almost every major website builder — Wix, Squarespace, Jimdo, WordPress.com.
It really comes down to what you need:
a shop, a blog, a newsletter, a portfolio.
There is nothing wrong with any of these platforms. They work well. I still have one WordPress.com site. It’s feature-rich, powerful, and capable of doing almost anything. But that’s also the problem — it can become complicated and distracting when all you want to do is microblog. You can spend hours building and tweaking your site instead of actually writing.
Yes, you can add a newsletter. Yes, you can enable comments. But in the end, it’s still another large company platform. These days, I find myself wanting to support smaller developers instead.
Let’s talk about Substack.
Substack was heavily promoted — especially when Instagram shifted toward reels and algorithm changes. Many writers moved there. But Substack has slowly become another form of social media. Constant notes, like the old Twitter days. The pressure to offer paid subscriptions. A constant stream of emails.
Truthfully, I don’t enjoy newsletters. My inbox already feels full. I understand why email is a powerful marketing tool — it works — but as a reader, it can feel overwhelming.
I much prefer RSS feeds.
Recently, I downloaded Feeeed by Nate Parrott. It’s simple and beautifully done. I can follow my favorite blogs without cluttering my inbox. Just quiet reading. Kudos to the developer for creating such a thoughtful app.
In the end, it comes down to personal preference. I prefer supporting smaller developers who are building meaningful, focused tools.
